Color Coding (Standard Colors):
Green (water), Yellow (flammable gases), Blue (compressed air/inert gases), Red (fire protection), Brown (oils/fuels), Grey (steam/vapor), Black (waste water/sewage), Orange (acids), Violet (alkalis/caustics). -
Flow Direction:
Mandatory indication of flow direction with arrows. -
Text:
Clear identification of pipe content by name or chemical formula, legible and in German or the relevant local language. -
Placement:
Labels placed at regular intervals along the pipe, near valves, bends, and points where pipes pass through walls or floors. -
Text Size:
Text height must be appropriate to pipe diameter for readability from a safe distance. -

Color Coding & Banding:
Pipes are marked using base colors with additional color bands or stripes to indicate content and hazards:-
Water: Green base, sometimes with white stripes
-
Flammable gases: Yellow base with black bands
-
Air: Blue base, plain
-
Fire protection: Red base, often with white stripes
-
Oils/fuels: Brown base, may include black or white stripes
-
Steam: Grey base, sometimes with white stripes
-
Waste water: Black base, with white or grey stripes
-
Acids: Orange base, sometimes with black stripes
-
Alkalis/caustics: Purple/violet base, sometimes with white or black bands

Marine Pipe Marking Marine Pipe Marking ISO 14726 - Key Specifications
-
Purpose:
Ensure safety and clear identification of pipe contents in marine environments such as ships, offshore platforms, and ports, complying with international maritime safety standards. -
Standards:
Commonly follow ISO 14726 (Identification colors for shipboard systems) and sometimes incorporate elements from IMO (International Maritime Organization) and SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) requirements. -
Color Coding:
Marine pipe marking uses a specific set of standardized colors to identify the system type:-
Light Blue: Seawater (cooling, ballast, etc.)
-
Green: Freshwater (potable, boiler feed)
-
Yellow: Fuel oil and flammable liquids
-
Brown: Lubricating oil
-
Red: Firefighting systems
-
Purple: Sewage and waste systems
-
Orange: Compressed air
-
Black: Oil waste and sludge
-
-
Flow Direction:
Arrows or other clear directional indicators must show flow direction. -
Text and Symbols:
Clear text identifying contents, sometimes including pressure or temperature info. Safety or hazard symbols are used where relevant. -
Label Placement:
Labels should be placed at visible intervals along pipes, especially near valves, bends, and access points. -
Durability:
Materials must be resistant to harsh marine conditions such as salt spray, humidity, vibration, and temperature extremes.
